A Historic Journey Beyond the Far Side
NASA’s Artemis II crew has begun the voyage back to Earth after a record-breaking lunar fly-by that took humans further into deep space than ever before. During the mission's high-stakes "Moon Day," the four-person crew surpassed the distance record of 248,655 miles (400,000km) set by Apollo 13 in 1970, officially marking a new frontier in human exploration.
The milestone was reached at approximately 13:56 EDT (18:56 BST) on Monday. Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen marked the moment with a tribute to the pioneers of the past: "As we surpass the furthest distance humans have ever traveled, we do so in honoring the extraordinary efforts and feats of our predecessors."
Silence and the Solar Eclipse
The most intense phase of the mission occurred as the Orion spacecraft drifted behind the lunar far side. For 40 minutes, the crew experienced a scheduled "loss of signal," cutting off all radio and laser communication with mission control.
Upon re-emerging, astronaut Christina Koch broke the silence. "It’s so great to hear the Earth again," she said, before delivering a poignant message on the mission's purpose: "We will explore... but ultimately, we will always choose Earth. We will always choose each other."
During the fly-by, the crew witnessed a rare total solar eclipse from space, seeing the Sun’s shimmering corona peek from behind the lunar disk. Pilot Victor Glover described the visual as "amazing," noting the distinct "Earth shine" visible even as the Moon blocked the Sun's direct glare.

Science Through Human Eyes
While satellites have mapped the Moon's far side, the Artemis II crew became the first humans to see its craters and lava plains firsthand. To aid NASA’s science team, the astronauts dimmed internal lights to reduce window glare, taking high-resolution photos and recording audio descriptions of the landscape’s textures and colors.
Dr. Kelsey Young, NASA's lunar science lead, explained that trained human observers can detect nuances in geology that cameras might miss. "Human eyes and brains are highly sensitive to subtle changes in color and texture," she noted.
In a personal moment, the crew requested that two newly observed craters be named:
- "Integrity": Named after their Orion capsule.
- "Carroll": A tribute to Commander Reid Wiseman’s late wife, who passed away in 2020.
Testing the Limits for Mars
President Donald Trump congratulated the team via a call to the Orion center, stating the mission had made "all America really proud." Commander Wiseman told the President the crew had seen sights "no human has ever seen, not even Apollo."
Beyond the spectacle, Artemis II serves as a critical stress test for NASA’s hardware. Sensors monitored how Orion’s power and thermal systems managed the rapid temperature shifts during the eclipse and the isolation of the far side.
The spacecraft is now on a trajectory toward Earth. The mission will conclude with its most dangerous phase: a high-speed reentry into the atmosphere at 25,000 mph, followed by a parachute splashdown in the Pacific Ocean to test the capsule’s heat shield and recovery protocols. This flight paves the way for the Artemis III mission, which aims to land humans on the lunar surface for the first time since 1972.
