Music Titan Universal Target of $64bn Takeover Bid by Bill Ackman
Billionaire Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square has launched a $64.3 billion bid to take over Universal Music Group and list the company in the United States.

A Bold Move for the World’s Largest Music Company
Universal Music Group (UMG), the titans of the music industry representing superstars like Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, and Kendrick Lamar, has been targeted in a massive takeover bid valued at approximately $64.3 billion (£48 billion).
The proposal comes from Pershing Square, the investment firm led by billionaire Bill Ackman. If successful, the deal would result in a merger that transitions UMG’s primary listing to the United States.
The Pitch for a New Era
Bill Ackman, whose firm already holds a significant stake in Universal, praised the company’s management for building a "world-class artist roster" and skillfully navigating the rise of artificial intelligence. However, Ackman argues that UMG’s current stock performance does not reflect its intrinsic value.
According to Ackman, Universal’s share price has "languished" due to structural issues rather than business failures. In a letter sent to the board on Tuesday, he cited several factors for the company's "dramatic underperformance" on global indexes, including:
The proposal comes from Pershing Square , the investment firm led by billionaire Bill Ackman .
- Uncertainty surrounding the 18% stake held by the Bolloré Group.
- Delays and complications regarding a potential U.S. listing.
Details of the $64 Billion Offer
The proposed transaction offers a mix of cash and equity to existing shareholders:
- €5.05 per share in cash (totaling €9.4 billion).
- 0.77 shares in the newly formed company for every Universal share held.
The new entity would be listed on the New York Stock Exchange, a move intended to provide better access to American capital markets. Furthermore, Ackman plans to "refresh" the board of directors, notably proposing the inclusion of Michael Ovitz, the legendary U.S. talent agent and former president of the Walt Disney Company.
Market Reaction and Next Steps
The markets reacted favorably to the news, with Universal’s shares jumping roughly 11% in early trading following the announcement.
Universal Music Group, which operates iconic labels such as EMI and Island Records and owns the legendary Abbey Road Studios, is now faced with a decision that could reshape the corporate structure of the global music business. Pershing Square aims to finalize the deal by the end of the year.
The music giant has been approached for comment regarding the offer. This development follows a busy period for UMG, which recently settled a high-profile royalties dispute with TikTok and has been exploring a secondary sale of shares in the U.S. market.
