A Billion-Dollar Valuation for the Future of Hypersonic Flight
Hermeus, the Los Angeles-based aerospace startup, has announced a massive $350 million funding injection to accelerate the development of what it describes as the world’s fastest unmanned aircraft. This latest round, a blend of equity and debt, officially propels the company into "unicorn" territory with a $1 billion valuation.
The funding comes at a pivotal moment for the defense sector. According to data from PitchBook, venture capital investment in defense technology surpassed $9 billion across 265 global rounds last year alone. For Hermeus, this capital serves as fuel for its ambitious plan to master hypersonic travel—flight at five times the speed of sound (Mach 5).
Strategic Financing and Industry Support
The round consists of $200 million in equity, led by Khosla Ventures. The lineup of backers includes a "who’s who" of defense and venture powerhouses:
- Existing Investors: Founders Fund, Canaan Partners, In-Q-Tel, and RTX Ventures.
- New Participants: Cox Enterprises and Destiny Tech100.
The remaining $150 million was raised as debt. CEO and co-founder AJ Piplica explained to TechCrunch that this structure allows the company to scale manufacturing without excessively diluting current shareholders. "We build a lot of hardware," Piplica noted. "Financing a large portion of our spend non-dilutively is absolutely the way to do it."

The "Pratt & Whitney" Pivot
Hermeus’s path to a billion-dollar valuation was accelerated by a strategic technical shift. Rather than continuing the costly and time-consuming process of building a proprietary engine from scratch, the startup partnered with Pratt & Whitney (a subsidiary of RTX Corporation).
By modifying the existing F100 engine, Hermeus has been able to:
- Iterate faster using a proven, functional propulsion system.
- Secure U.S. government contracts by demonstrating near-term viability.
- Diversify its goals, satisfying Department of Defense demand while working toward the Mach 5 milestone.
Adopting the "SpaceX" Model
Hermeus is embracing a "fail fast, learn faster" philosophy reminiscent of SpaceX. Last month, the company successfully flew a demonstrator aircraft the size of an F-16. Its roadmap includes a supersonic iteration followed by a third, even more advanced aircraft currently in development.
Piplica acknowledges that this rapid prototyping approach is rare in modern aviation, where development cycles often stretch across decades. "There’s nowhere in the world where companies are building new full-scale aircraft on an annual basis," he said, highlighting that the company’s biggest challenge is finding and training talent capable of such high-speed innovation.
Preparing for the "Right Kind of Risk"
With a workforce approaching 300 employees, Hermeus is bracing for the inevitable setbacks that come with pushed boundaries. Piplica stressed that the team is prepared for potential flight failures, viewing them as necessary data points.
"If you don't build a lot, it takes you a lot longer because you’re going to baby things," Piplica remarked. By building more aircraft and accepting calculated risks, Hermeus aims to collapse the 20-year development cycles typical of the aerospace industry into a fraction of the time.
