Google Brings 3D Conversion to Samsung Galaxy XR Apps
Google launches "auto-spatialization" for the Samsung Galaxy XR, allowing users to convert 2D apps and videos into immersive 3D experiences.

Google Expands Android XR Functionality for Samsung Galaxy XR
Google has officially released a significant update for the Samsung Galaxy XR headset, introducing an experimental feature called "auto-spatialization." This technology allows users to transform traditional 2D content (including apps, websites, images, and videos) into immersive 3D experiences.
Initially teased last year, the feature began its rollout this Tuesday. It represents a major leap for the Android XR ecosystem, aiming to bridge the gap between legacy 2D media and the spatial computing environment.
How Auto-Spatialization Works
The "auto-spatialization" tool uses software algorithms to add a sense of depth to flat media. However, Google has noted several technical parameters and limitations for the experimental launch:
Initially teased last year, the feature began its rollout this Tuesday.
- Resolution and Frame Rate: The feature currently supports content up to 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second.
- Focus-Based: Spatialization only applies to the specific app window currently in focus.
- Battery Impact: Google warns that enabling this mode "uses slightly more battery power" than standard 2D viewing.
Enhancing the Virtual Home Space
Beyond 3D conversion, the update brings a suite of quality-of-life improvements designed to make the Galaxy XR more intuitive:
- Wall Pinning: Users can now "pin" specific apps to physical walls within their virtual environment for persistent access.
- Hand Visualization: While interacting with virtual content in "home space mode," users can now see their real hands, improving spatial awareness and interaction accuracy.
- Session Continuity: A new "jump back in" feature allows the headset to remember and display the apps used in the previous session immediately upon putting the device back on.
A Growing Ecosystem
The software update coincides with a milestone for the platform's content library. Google announced that there are now over 100 apps available on the Google Play store specifically optimized for XR. This mark represents a doubling of the catalog since the Galaxy XR's initial launch in October.
While still "experimental," these updates signal Google and Samsung's commitment to making the Android XR platform a more versatile competitor in the mixed-reality market, offering users new ways to engage with the digital world.
