Macron Confirms Return of French Nationals Detained in Iran for Three Years

French Citizens Released from Iran Amid Heightened Regional Tensions

Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday that Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris, two French nationals held in Iran for over three years, are finally returning home. The release follows a complex negotiation process mediated by Oman and signals a shift in the diplomatic landscape between Paris and Tehran.

"Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris are free and on their way back to France, after three and a half years of detention in Iran," President Macron stated in a post on X. "This is a relief for all of us and, of course, for their families."

A Long Road to Freedom

Kohler and her partner, Paris, were initially detained in 2022. Iranian authorities accused the pair of spying for French and Israeli intelligence services, charges the French government consistently denounced as baseless. Following their release from the infamous Evin prison in November of last year, the couple had been residing at the French embassy in Tehran awaiting a safe exit.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed he spoke with the couple as they prepared for their departure. Barrot, who conducted high-level talks with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi over the weekend, noted their "emotion and joy" at the prospect of reunited with their families.

In the French National Assembly, lawmakers greeted the news with a rare standing ovation, marking the end of a long-standing diplomatic crisis.

The Terms of the Exchange

According to the official Iranian news agency IRNA, the release was part of a bilateral understanding. In exchange for Kohler and Paris, France has reportedly agreed to release Mahdieh Esfandiari, an Iranian student living in Lyon who was arrested last year for anti-Israel social media activity.

Additionally, IRNA reported that France agreed to withdraw a formal complaint against Iran previously filed with the International Court of Justice.

Geopolitical Context: A Split with Washington

The release comes at a moment of significant divergence between France and the United States regarding Middle East policy. As the Trump administration intensifies military operations and rhetoric against Iran, Paris has become increasingly critical of the escalation.

This diplomatic thaw was underscored last week when a vessel belonging to the French shipping giant CMA CGM became the first Western container ship to traverse the Strait of Hormuz since Iran effectively closed the waterway. The Strait, a vital artery for global energy, has been at the center of a global crisis following Iranian retaliation for U.S. and Israeli strikes.

Looming Deadline

Despite the diplomatic breakthrough between France and Iran, the broader regional situation remains precarious. U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a severe ultimatum, threatening to "wipe out a whole civilization" if Iran does not reach a deal to permanently reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Wednesday at 00:00 GMT.

While the return of Kohler and Paris provides a humanitarian victory for France, the looming U.S. deadline suggests that the path toward regional de-escalation remains fraught with extreme risk.
