Landmark Action at Top Investigative Nonprofit
Unionized employees at ProPublica, the acclaimed nonprofit investigative newsroom, launched a historic 24-hour strike on Wednesday. This marks the first work stoppage in the organization’s history, as workers push for stronger safeguards regarding artificial intelligence, job security, and fair compensation.
The ProPublica Guild, which represents approximately 150 members (including reporters, editors, and product staff) is currently negotiating its first collective bargaining agreement since unionizing in 2023. After more than two years of quiet negotiations, the unit voted in March to authorize the strike if management failed to meet their demands.
The AI Flashpoint
A central pillar of the dispute revolves around the role of generative artificial intelligence in the newsroom. While the industry is split on the technology, ProPublica staff are demanding formal contract language that ensures human oversight and transparency.
Recent tensions escalated when ProPublica management introduced a new AI policy. Mark Olalde, a member of the bargaining committee, characterized the move as "unilateral implementation." In response, the NewsGuild, which represents the staff, filed an unfair labor practice charge earlier this week.

"I think there are times when it can be used ethically as a tool," said union member Katie Campbell. "But when it starts to replace core functions that can be done better by humans, that’s where the struggle lies."
Beyond Technology: Wages and Job Security
While AI has dominated the headlines, the guild is also fighting for traditional labor protections. These include "just cause" provisions (which prevent management from disciplining or firing employees without a legitimate, documented reason) as well as general wage increases and layoff protections.
"We’ve been working to resolve this quietly for over two years," Campbell noted. "This is a moment to make clear to management and to the public how important these issues are to the people who produce this work."
A Call for a Digital Picket Line
During the 24-hour walkout, the union has called on the public to honor a digital picket line. Supporters are asked to refrain from visiting the ProPublica website, clicking on its stories via social media, or engaging with content produced by its partner organizations.
As of Wednesday afternoon, ProPublica management had not issued an official comment regarding the strike or the unfair labor practice charge.
The strike at ProPublica reflects a broader trend across the media landscape, as newsrooms from The New York Times to Fortune grapple with how to integrate automated technology without compromising journalistic integrity or employment stability.
